Through my postcard I am trying to express that grouping young children according to their ability can have negative and positive effects on children. As you can see the top group are happy as they are in a higher group. Where as they bottom group is unhappy as they are considered as a lower group which makes them feel unhappy.Should young children be grouped by ability?According to a report by University College London’s Institute of Education and the National Education Union, grouping young children by ability is more and more frequent across England. This issue is important as it has raised worries about the effect of educating by capacity on children’s’ confidence and goals. BBC (2017) Should young chidlren be grouped by ability? Available at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-42154013 (Accessed: 04/12/17) This issue is important currently as it can have an negative impact on young children who have been allocated in a lower group as it can affect their self-esteem. For example, the child mentioned in the article, who had been allocated in a lower group called himself not intelligent as others. This also had an effect on the child’s mother as it made her feel upset that her child had been allocated in a lower group and wasn’t going to move to a higher group. BBC (2017) Should young children be grouped by ability? Available at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-42154013 (Accessed: 04/12/17) Although grouping children according to their ability has negative impacts, there are also many benefits. For instance: children can have more interventions to help them with their studies, it’s more easier for teachers to teach as they can concentrate on specific children and do not have to explain tasks separately. Furthermore, children who are less able can get left behind if the teacher concentrates more on children who are more able. Another big advantage is that students who participate less are more able to participate when they are not with brighter students. Robert E. Slavin (1990) Achievement Effects of Ability Grouping in Secondary Schools: A Best-Evidence Synthesis.pp. 471-499. Available at:https://www.jstor.org/stable/1170761?seq=3#page_scan_tab_contents(Accessed :04/12/17)There are disadvantages of grouping children as it can effect their confidence levels and their self-esteem if they are put in a lower group as they may feel they are not intelligent, but on the other hand there are many advantages as the children will be able to study more as the teachers can set task which are suitable for them. Moreover, it is more easier for teachers as they have enough time to teach students as they are all the same level which means teachers can focus more on students. Whereas if the children were not grouped according to their ability, teachers would have to set different tasks which means more time is spent on more able students and less able students can get left behind. Overall, children should be grouped according to their ability so they can progress more and it can also reduce failures as they get more confidence and are able to participate more with people who have the same ability.References:Robert E. Through reading it is important to analyse the text and found out what it is trying to convey. Analyzing the text  has helped me to get a further understanding of the reading. Moreover, it is important to reference each quote and part of text which is used in the assignments as it can be seen as plagiarism. The feedback I got from task 1, I have worked on that and it has helped to know how I can do better for other assignments. In this module creating different postcards on contemporary issues was fun and reading from books was challenging as I don’t like to read.
