I recently had proposed a topic
to the company to study. My topic was rather or not that our company should be
fracking or not. Yes fracking can have its benefits but it also has its
negative sides. I will be discussing both of these throughout this paper and
propose on whether or not we should be using this process. Also I will discuss
what Fracking is and if there are other alternatives to fracking and explain
the alternative if any.

Fracking is basically just the
abbreviation for hydraulic fracturing. Hydraulic fracturing is a type of drill
that has been used for many of years. In the industry in has been used for over
sixty years, and probably longer then that by private businesses and personal
use. This hydraulic fracturing along with other technology such as drilling
horizontally, other words known as horizontal drilling, has been the leading
force of the surplus of our U.S. oils and natural gases. Horizontal is just a
form of directional drilling that has improved the production of getting oil
and hitting wells over the last few years.

Fracking involves quite a few amounts of
steps. First you have to safely tap the hard rock formations by drilling about
a mile or two into the surface of the earth while slowly turning in a
horizontal direction. Then after that you have to continue a few thousand feet
further into the ground. They do this process so a single site can accommodate
for a few of the wells. Once the well is drilled it will be cased and cemented.
The cement is generally a mix of water that takes up about ninety percent, sand,
which takes about nine percent, and then the additives, which takes about one
percent. The additives within the cemented mold play a number of significant roles.
One of the biggest ones is that they help to reduce friction. Reducing the
friction can reduce the amount of pumping pressure that is required from the diesel-powered
sources, which also reduces the amount of emissions in the air. Also it will
prevent pipe erosion from occurring, which in turn will help protect the
environment.

With all the positives that
come with fracking there are some negatives. Fracking is such a big debatable topic because of the amount
of natural resources that are needed to complete its process. Also because of
the negative effects it can have on the Earth such as the air, water, and the
soil. There are some concerns on what it does to
the food eaten by people that may live close or those that are even living
hundreds of miles from the nearest gas has not received any attention from
anybody. One of the main chemicals used in fracking, which is methane,
is said to escape in a small percentage into the atmosphere. Methane is said to
be stronger than carbon dioxide in the trapping of heat in the atmosphere. The
release of this gas is a toxic element to the air quality of surrounding
fracking sites. Also, ancillary components of fracking directly increase air
pollution at well sites.

Tons and tons of millions of gallons of water
are always used in the process. This reduces the amount of clean water that is
currently available to surrounding communities in the area. When water is not
currently available to local sites, it gets transported from other regions of
the world. Which in the end cuts down available water from lakes and rivers
across the United States. Water contamination also reduces overall water supply
of regional when in fracking areas. The chemicals that are used in the process often
leak back into local water supplies.

In addition to the air and water pollution,
fracking also increases the potential for oil spills to occur. This in turn can
harm the soil and the surrounding vegetation that is being planted and farmed. Earthquakes
also have a higher chance of occurring due to the amount of pressure due to
fracking.

Gas fracturing does not require large amounts of
water and it also reduces the need for what chemicals and the amount of
chemicals that are used in fracking. “Unlike water, the gel does a kind of
disappearing act underground. It reverts to vapor due to pressure and heat,
then returns to the surface – along with the natural gas  – for
collection, possible reuse and ultimate resale,” Nearing and Brino write. While
technology is starting to gain the support from workers in the industry,
hydraulic fracking is also gathering more believers from groups.
